the Given word
change
For our final project We were given the word ..change this opens the door for quite a few ideas but I shouldn't get so stuck on the word change
Idea generation
mY FIRST IDEA
I have gone through a few ideas because i was not sure how I wanted to approach this i started by wanted to make a breakup piece where it would be centred around two people purely relent on performance but no one was really into doing that idea which I was fine with.
Another idea, I had was to attempt making this Wes Anderson inspired short, rising up the yellow and white tones of the scenes and sets complimented with nice smooth quick turns but after looking on YouTube looking out for how others have approached it but even though I love Wes Anderson I wasn't sure he's style fits my film personality.
So ultimately, I think I would like to make a satirical and dramatic groundhog day like film where of course everyday is the same it resets.

Detailed version of idea
My idea is to set my character in this day/days but the difference is that their day will be never ending they're repeating the same day over and over, resetting every time because they're actually dead they're in hell and they're repeating the day that they died over and over. The universe is cursing our protagonist so these non everyday experiences kill off our main character out of no where as they live it out having the understanding that they have done this day and the dying isn't a dream.
Because I feel my idea is a bit larger so I will only do a quarter of my idea and will label it chapter one.
In chapter one we will start with a black screen only hearing music until.
"Jessie" our main character will be at a party the camera will be introduced to Jessie doing shots at the start, no one else will be at this party because no one came because of our characters characteristics, Jessie is an obnoxious person they only really think of them selves and looking good in front of others but in spite of that they invite everyone to the St Patrick's party.
Jessie will pass out and will wake up on the floor the starting positions for all of the time loops
being woken up by knocking
And in between we will see how Jessie is reacting to this situation and in every reset they will start to think of things from a different perspective more and more and you will start to see some character growth occasionally reverting.
We will get a range of different deaths so not everything feels the same and boring as my audience is a little younger I will have to keep their attention by doing different versions also changing the dialogue in the 2nd and 3rd run will be something we will see as our character changes.
It will end with them trying to figure out what is going on and we will get a good shot that shows of fall of Jessies face and how distraught they're and how this now found world is having an effect until we hear a mysterious deep voice behind the camera which we can only assume is the reason for this temporal anomaly and in the dialogue we can deduce that it is the devil.

my inspiration
The movie "Palm Springs" has large inspiration on my idea for this piece, I like how it changed up the formula of the having to repeat the same *inset time period* over and over. I can link this looping of the same day genre to the topic of change by showing how the day isn't changing and that something has to happen to create that change to get out of the loop.
I have decided to call my piece "St Patrick's day" because going off all these titles are on the nose with palm spring being in palm springs and groundhog day being on April 2nd groundhog day so I think the common factor on these two is they're using world events and location to base their title on. I will be filming a lot in and around St Patrick's day so I believe it only makes sense.
Looking at some of the transcript of some of the films I noticed the lines "Today, tomorrow, yesterday its all the day" from Palm Springs I think this could be apart of character inspiration I think it clearly is something my character would be feeling and is so key to how their arc will progress over time maybe not necessarily just in this first chapter.

theme
A theme for my film is going to be subtly mental health, it wont be completely obvious but you will see some drinking and deteriorating mental health as they try to figure out this time looped vortex and why they keep dying and have to witness the same things the same patterns everything the same all the time.
Change is the theme change is non existent for Jessie on "St Patrick's day"

moodboard
How does this mood board tell you about the cinematography I am aiming to pull off?
Well as you can see I am staying pretty similar in terms of angles I want the world to feel compact because that's what it is.
I also used the mood board as an opportunity to show some of the shots I want to include in my piece like for instance the point of view shot I want to play around with it a bit more I have dabbled in it but I want to make sure I can do better they ad a different element in terms of framing and it would suit my gene especially as most of the scene i will be using this technique it will be for comedy so it will fit in with the comedy-drama.
I defiantly would like to have a lot of the framing centred as I have always preferred that look where the protagonist is the one you want to see, even when they're the less important in the faming, but I will not be filming in front of random people only background actors.

Palm Springs
|
The target audience for the movie Palm Springs are young adults and millennials living in America we can deduce from the age of the main actors and side characters, Andy Samberg our male lead is 43 and Cristin Milloti our female lead is 36 That the targeted audience are 25- 41 year olds as that is the bridge between the genZ generation and the millennials which is the type of audience that would have originally watched groundhog day when it came out, and could've possible had children and introduced them to that film and those teenagers/adults could watch my production.
|
Palm Springs changes a formula of just repeating a day over and over by yourself but this time 3 different people are going through it and they don't start off with us discovering we're in this loop but instead take us straight into our protagonists loop hundreds of loops in I fins this interesting and am interested in emulation some of the shots and overall vibe for my piece, its light and romantic but also grounded in places I would like to have this but thinking about how starting in the middle of the looping could confuse an audience is something I need to think about and if I go with that how will I communicate to them what is happening whist explaining my experience.
Palm springs came out in 2020 in a time where it was certainly relatable to people that were inside for days, months, and depending on their health years, palm springs' narrative in its self is a display on life is mundane and even if its unrealistic it want's to show that we're our most real selves when we think no one is around and even though people are around nothing changes you know there's no consequences so it is almost as if no one is around.
Palm Springs acknowledges other versions of this time loop genre in a random outburst of hysteria perhaps I could do the same with "town centre" where we take a moment to talk about our protagonists mental health, as why wouldn't someone struggle when they're dying so easy and if they cant continue their life.

russian doll
|
The target audience for Russian doll are millennials, I get this idea because our main lead is a millennial and in her run of films and tv shows she carries an audience of more mature viewers with her being in 15's and 18 rated films. Russian Doll is also a story based in new York that in its main loop is connected to a party and everyone there is millennial there is no one younger in this cast so it is easier to deduce that the director was trying to tell this story that people 26-41 could enjoy almost relate to at times.
|
Russian Doll does this idea differently because it is episodically so they have more freedom and that is made clear to the audience by our protagonist getting out of the looped day, if they don't die they carry on like real life. But dying is made so much easier almost like a curse for comedic value so ultimately they die until they achieve what they have been missing.
This is what I am looking to adopt with my character being very cynical and approaches life with pompous arrogance so I think using some of the elements from this would produce something good, and could help me create an ending.
My takeaway from the first season of Russian doll was that I could adopt for characters and their traits

I saw this and I thought about doing something similar in my film as I noticed how the scenes that I had in mind might be familiar so I wanted to link back to this by talking to this a couple across the street which is done in a comedic matter but this event then leads into them dying.
Taking inspiration can be so important when trying to make call backs and achieve this desired look and feel and with my character having this arrogance talking to random people would make sense

naked
|
The target audience for "Naked" is a younger generation most likely 12- 15 year olds I can come to this conclusion because it is at its core a comedy and in this modern iteration of films the comedies are being more targeted to younger audiences you can see this in other Netflix properties like "When we first met" and "The Mitchel's vs the monsters" which are both 12's like Naked, with Naked being a 12 it has to stay within its age restrictions this inclines the movie to attract its self more to be a family watch for some laughs.
This is more comedy than i am looking to go for but there is a lot of good spots I would like to mirror. |
The film "Naked" embraces the comedy elements of this genre it does stay in the genres conventions by having the person overcome their internal problems because it is a comedy-drama ending with him learning from his mistakes and learning new things about life, and whatever mystical being that is controlling this situation wanted him to learn everything is telling me this is how my work should go so i think this is the best way to structure this, i hope i will be able to have a decent run time because this might come off rushed if not.
Groundhog day
|
Groundhog day is intended for a teenage audience at least it was at the time but I would not say the same now as looking back on the film it does not have the best themes anymore using his situation he's manipulating women to get to sleep with them which I am not sure how much that relates to a younger audiences and if it is something we should be teaching them.
|
Groundhog Day is a movie about change the movie develops this character over time as he starts the loop by trying to use his situation to sleep with women which I do not think would be wildly accepted in todays setting considering how more inclined we are to these kinds of things.
The plotline of self improvement to get out of the loop he's stuck in is a good one but due to the repetitiveness of the film I wouldn't be so inclined to re watch it often, but I think where I have the advantage is the fact that my film is shorter so it will have more replay value.

gROUNDHOG DAYING
|
The target audience for groundhog Daying is millennials I can deduce this by looking at where this is set, it is set in a office building full of people 30-36 so it would not be out of the possibility that this is aimed towards and older audience. This is also entirely is a rif on the original groundhog day movie looking back on it and referencing it you could say they have done this because they watched it when they were young so they're trying to tap on that millennial audience that want to feel that nostalgia.
|
Groundhog day was a spin on this, where everyone is aware of what it is so instead of calling someone crazy they're rather excited for them and what is going on they poke fun and it helps me think about if I want the people around to understand what is going on so I think this was important to look at I never thought about it before but in this modern age it would totally make sense.
lUCID DREAMING
|
The target audience for this "Lucid Dreaming" short film is clearly a younger adult themed project it adopts themes from other directors like Wes Anderson, It is also set in a university for university so you would have to think it is aiming to wards people their age and in and around the area. Something more similar to what I would be wanting to do create this narrative that feels like the surrounding world is alive.
|
Lucid Dreaming was an interesting take on this formula it stays more in the conventions of what you'd expect from a loop genre but it follows someone's day as they ultimately die at the end of the night, after a few times they notice the daja vu and the day begins to alter. I enjoyed some of the scenes and how it was framed a lot of use of the tracking shots were continuing to inspire some of the shots I came up with, framing is something I am looking to make important with peoples attention span getting shorter and shorter this is a good way to keep it by implementing different stylings.
The map of tiny perfect things
|
The target audience for the map of tiny perfect things are high schoolers or teenagers 16-18 to be more specific. Everything is pointed to this being the case with it being leaded with to teenage character's to the coming of age undertones the movie feels young and relaxing which I think is well expressed in the trailer. The music is recent and is more of a indie genre which I think a lot of people my age listen to, for me this tells me that I should try to make my piece feel young now that doesn't mean that i have to use these copyrighted music but I could do this by making my dialogue feel like it would fit 2022 teens.
|
The map of the tiny perfect thing is the newest edition on this list, it does change things but stays within its conventions, I would compare it more to palm spring than a groundhog day or Russian doll. The map of tiny perfect thing is a coming of age movie surrounded by the topic of grief that I think would really fit with our given word as we are in this temporal anomaly because she wishes this day would never end as her mother dies on this day so change cant happen until she is able to change and understand grief is inevitable and that time has to happen for us to heal
I liked a lot of the framing in this film and I think I could use some of these to make mine have that proper look and feel i am not sure what colours I want to adopt for this I think a mix of light positive colours as well as darker negative colours to represent the comedy-drama of this all.

My takeaway from this movie is that I want it to feel young and bright, the sun has recently came out again so I think this wont be to hard to achieve with it feeling more like with the use of colour correction i can achieve this look and feel however I will only be using it for half the video as the tone will somewhat shift as my characters mental health shifts.
I am glad I found this film as it has opened my eyes about how I can balance my colour's and work on colour theory.
I am glad I found this film as it has opened my eyes about how I can balance my colour's and work on colour theory.
To link this back to my film I have mentioned the colours and the light aspects of this film when people watch my film even though it is a comedy drama it isn't going to leave you crying so I want to make sure i get that across however i do find it hard to write funny writing dialogue had never been my strong suit but notably in the parts where I am outside and the colours are less muted and I am able to take advantage of the more vibrant colours outside with added colour correction this will be the visual imagery alongside the content to let the audience know this is when the moments are happier using a lighter tone is generally associated with comedies so I don't see why this wouldn't all fit in perfectly with my film
Camera workings as refrences
|
Thinking of camera work we always come back to Wes Anderson and how he shoots his shots and as I am thinking about how i want tot shoot some shots i am thinking about the whip pan and how I could use it in a way that feels right and not forced like Wes he uses the whip pan to transition a lot it is a signature so I could use this whip pan in transition to tell urgency and follow the pace of the film.
Why I don't just want to use the basic transitions is because I don't think they necessarily fit both my genre and the story and these are important thing to keep in mind when editing, the whip pan creates a smooth opportunity to move to another part of the scene in quick fashion so I think this is ideal for me

colour in film
comedy - drama genre
Dramatic comedies are where the characters experience a change for the better and work things out to a happy ending. I think this is what I will do for my production it follows other productions in the groundhog day genre its not just this type of film or show that adopts this a lot of other movies and television shows do this as well, so I could watch a lot of different shows and use shows that I have already seen so I can use this to prepare a more professional tone for my work so it doesn't feel amateur which is not what I want for my final.
Colour grading in this genere
For my film I am looking to mix in comedy in some scenes I would say half of it and the other half to be drama, slowly razing to up the tension.
Going off this chart on colour theory in film i will be increasing my yellows to look a little more like something like this page colours, I will be doing this because in audiences heads they associate the yellows colour with fun and humour and I do defiantly want to have both those element and I want the audience to know what Jessie is going through as their life descends into a joke. as well as the yellows I will increase the white to be that soft middle ground also because it will only make the world feel more vibrant

So when it comes down to colour and my film it was split in two. I am using some LED lights to create that flashing grab you attention look that you would see in productions this will help with the mise en scene of a party and should go a way for colour wise for the parts they're used As well as this I will be using framing and having the colours from within the frame to make the scene feel more alive and sometimes seem like an unreality
During filming I never really put anything in shots deliberately to create a colour scheme, which i do kind of wish I did as I do apricate the idea of emotional realism which very much uses external lighting sources to create this expression of a character or a scenes emotion symbolism but perhaps this wouldn't suit my film as I filmed a lot in the day.
adobe colour wheel
This is from my test shot, u took a screengrab and placed it in colour wheel to get a grasp of how the colours where going to look going into filming and as you can see the colours at this angle were spread a lot more than i'd ideally like in alot of the films ive referenced most notably the maps of tiny perfect things they keep the background colours pretty limited this way most of the attention is where it needs to be with our characters. So I will probably frame this a little differently to lessen the colours possible by getting a bit lower to not show the grass or so much of the car that it take so much of the frame.
further research
age ratings
In the UK PG-13 is the rating used to signify that the category was a film content with a “higher level of intensity".
That could include some more violence like showing fight scenes that could include some blood, sexual references etc
PG-13 effectively allows people slightly younger than 13 to watch the film as well as long as they're accompanied by a parent or guardian. A of mainstream movies that come out nowadays are PG-13 because they have the highest audience potential without limiting a directors vision to much.

My movie will be pg-13 because i will die but i wont be showing how exactly because of budget limations as well as me wanting to stay within my age rating limitation.
Going into further research i have noticed that PG 13 is more of an international so moving past that I have delved to find its UK equivalent a 12 which is suited to a younger audience 12 and older the difference between this and a 12a is that this one wouldn't require a parent or guardian.
Thinking about how I would reach this ager rating it is simple I am promoting to a younger audience not necessarily 12 year olds but i want to be able to have the options open that way there are more eyes on my product. This does as well link to a lot of the films that i referenced with them being PG 13 it opens the gates to see a 12 this allows me to stick with my references in terms of capabilities and as well limitatations.
Angles
You can see how the more angles change the more they stay the same, a lot of the angles are less expansive meaning they stay still and kind of stay within the same few angles occasionally adopting a long shot tracking shot I do not want to step to far out of the camera techniques used in these because camera techniques fit genres and i would say mid shots, long shots and close ups extreme close ups are what i notice often in these films I mentioned and in other films in this genre i have also noticed how a lot of directors choose to go with handheld shots of these close ups i would say during these dramatic moments to increase the drama and maybe show a persons mental health using visual imagery.
To link this back to my film, you can see how i have taken some of these shots and used them to bring some life into some of my shots, i am inspired by a lot of these scenes so being able to do something similar was useful for me discovering what looks good and what looks bad and how I can improve on my framing in the future especially with expression becoming more of a thing in our projects learning to utilise what works is going to be key
Comparing tripod shots to rig shots
|
|
These two videos totally invoke a totally different vibe from each other, the cinematic tripod video is more basic actions and relies on telling it's story with cuts rather than its protagonists I do like the silted in camera transitions but cant help but think that in my piece it would be out of genre conventions i feel like comedy drama feel more alive.
The suitcase short film was inspiring I like the choreography
The suitcase short film was inspiring I like the choreography
This links back to my film in the fact that I am looking to do one or two long take and i wanted to see what would look better for my shots, a tracking rig or a stilted panning tripod. I believe that a tracking rig would have more of an influence on film as it is a more interesting shot that the camera staying in one place following for long period of time, as well as that i would have to have more space open to allow that and I don't for what I need these shots for.
I think having some shaking in the tracking shots is again adding character to shots as it feels more immersive and that can help the viewer connect to my film which ultimately is what I want.

dialogue writing techniques
|
This video talks a lot about purpose and the point of the lines that are being written, do they fit my character and their tone of dialogue. I cannot have my character be from a different country be in this country and have them only speak like they're in this country because what was the point the characters different origin if they're just the same as the average and not switching to a different language or have the accent.
I will be looking into keeping my dialogue consistent alongside my character because bad dialogue ruins a films replay ability. |
Shot examples i have looked at
Spider-man 3 dance
I want my Piece to have some funny moments so when I was thinking about funny moments in film I thought about this scene, I love how it is film and how the actors using their comedic chops. I would ultimately only emulate the walking dance scene but maybe I could develop a scene around it to give it more life I am not sure I think more time for the story the better I also don't want this to be to long as I don't think the others will be to long so I wouldn't want to be the block in anyone else's work being shown when we showcase.
I think people will understand when I recreate this scene its a notable scene my character is a movie watcher they have seen the scene wither peter when he becomes evil and is obnoxious to all the people around them, that is how my character is going to be so what this scene will tell that is that my character is a not a fan favourite I also do think like the original it will kind off come off funny so I will be able to hit both my genres from one scene.
It is important for me to hit that correct balance I want people to both laugh at scenes and take things a little more seriously but the overall tone will be mostly light and I DO NOT want it to come off as corny that would be no would and knowing my target audience that would turn them off my film.

I want this In my film because I want to do this shot where the camera spins around in this 360 motion (also known as an arc shot)to signify the dwindling mental health and that the world is not stable in fact it's spinning it's rewinding, I think it is a smart symbolism for what I am going for here.
When we see spiralling in films we typically associate them with franticness or a characters hysteria an example being euphoria's spinning room scene.
When we see spiralling in films we typically associate them with franticness or a characters hysteria an example being euphoria's spinning room scene.
Comparing this to what the concept of my 360 shot I can say that they're both there to show emotion the room is spinning in this shot because they're in a state of high so they aren't seeing the world as it is they're seeing it how they're preserving it because they aren't in control, now in my film the 360 is my characters emotion being expressed via the world being on its head its not right this not only makes the shot more interesting but would make the scene more dramatic.
Primary Research
On Instagram I asked a question to some of my followers hoping they would answer and they did.
What this tells me is that the people who would be into similar films as i am know of the films I am basing a lot of my core idea so that is good knowing I am making something people my age would be interested in watching because they have watched something similar. |
Continuing to ask questions on Instagram I was able to ask if my followers were into time looped films and the majority was (88%) so I know i am making something people are into so this helps me go into the right direction an define my idea and how many loops i want to include.
|
Reddit is full of so many different people and opinions and that is useful for my primary research because I have the possibility to get so many responses to help me in developing my idea.
I went to the r/Film Reddit because I knew that people that cared about films would be in here.
I asked the question, "how do we feel about groundhog day" I wrote this informally because that is the type of audiences I am aiming towards, the more relaxed people as my piece is not serious so I think if I tried aiming towards 40 year olds who like watching drama series It would not have the same effect.

film soundtracks
The Palm Springs soundtracks had a lot of good songs that added to that. Either way this soundtrack does what it should it fits the theme of the film as well as not being to heavy in one genre which can allow a viewer to hate or love a movie and take one out of it. You could be so into a movie and they changed the music to a different genre song so that puts you completly out of it anc ruins your viewing experience
This song will be used as part of a scene that will be used as kind of a transition the shot to get us from here to there whist also keeping the audiences attention and hopefully getting a laugh out of them because they understand the reference
I thought using the actually music instead of something similar would connect to the audience more because they know what is going on. it is also kind of symbolic with my character acting the same ways as Spider-Man did using this music

This song has a more dance pop vibe so I think it would suit a house party scene with its energy and lyrics I think it fits my idea well. Because when thinking about effective music for parties we immediately think in our heads that we will see
I will be using this at the very start during my cold open where I will have the solo party scene.
The reason I think this is one of the better songs to use for this because it uses its bass well with them being deep it will go alongside a dramatic scene

What does music do for my film? well it is creating the environment for my film with no music it feels more serious it feels more raw and that isn't necessarily what I am going for in this project I want it to be both light hearted and darker at times and the music will reflect that, all movies and tv shows do the same thing it is to create a tone, with a longer production id like to create a score with help of the music student.
lesson feedback
During a talk with Matty he helped me come up with how I could properly structure my film with 4 different acts each act starting after Jessie dies.
Each time they die I could make the clothing look rougher.
Because over time my character needs to become a better person they could see a morally implicating act that Jessie could see and ignore in the first act and then in the second gives it another eye, in the third act be tempted then in the fourth act finally help.
I shouldn't make the mistakes to obvious so that when you're watching its not to annoying to see it being pushed
What do want the audience to feel at the end?
I could ask people what narcissistic qualities do they think they have and use that to make my character to feel more realistic.

Equitment
This is the Cannon XA25 we have only used this item once so it is still new to me it has this 26.8mm, f/1.8 lens that can zoom up to 20x, I chose this camera because the use of the handle will come in useful for reaching, corners of an exceptionalshots
|
This is almost the same camera rig that i will be using, I would like to be able to do those tracking shots and in a lot of them they don't make it seem handheld because it is smooth so I would also like to use the rig to get those nice clean shots
|
This is the tripod i will be using I am hoping to have a camera person for most of my shots but I am understanding that maybe that wont be a choice during Easter break filming days so the tripod will be nice for getting non shaky stilted shots.

Researching flashback scenes in flim
This scene here is the perfect example of how a flashback can be effective in telling a story using this as an example they use the taste of the food to flashback to a childhood memory, this is displaying establishing an emotional connection between these two moment bonded by taste.
I can link this back to my film by using my flashback scene to show emotion viewers connect to emotion, seeing the spot where my character died in their last life triggers an emotional response which results in the heart attack you can see how i draw inspiration from this scene with the transition into the flashback and using emotion, obviously i want able to do as much in my flashback i mean i don't think it requires as much as my example does.
